Where do I begin?

You begin by starting a budget for your business plan.  The more money you put into it, the more you will get out of it.  When creating a budget plan for your website be sure to think of any necessity that you want to include such as hosting, domain name, marketing, SEO, design, logo and so on.  Do your research or consult with us if you need help.  Find out what everything will cost you and devise a plan.

Domain Name

A domain name is your websites web address. InviteTheWeb.com is our domain name.  This is part of your brand for your business so be sure to keep it relevant to your business name.  It is also a good idea to keep it short and easy for customers to remember.  Domain names come in many flavors.  You have .com, .info, .biz, .net, .tv, .co.uk, .gov, .org and so on.  All of these domains have a meaning behind them but for small businesses .com is the best solution unless you are a government agency of some kind you should go with a .gov.

Hosting

Hosting is a major necessity for your website.  This is where it can get tricky because there are literally thousands of hosting companies out there claiming they have it all.  There are also many kinds of hosting options you can shoose from.  The two I want to focus on are Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting.

Dedicated hosting is for those who need it all.  Usually  a major corporation will use this type of hosting because they require a server that can handle thousands of people or very heavy traffic coming into the website.  Also the dedicated server option allows you to control your server.  This is not recommended for those who are not technically savvy.

Shared hosting is a good option for small businesses with a good amount of traffic but yet you don’t need all of the options that dedicated offers.  This option is always ALOT cheaper and is a great way to start your business website.  You still get email addresses and alot of other useful items along with it depending on who you buy from.

Design

Knowing what you want on your website is key to paying for a design.  Be sure you have everything written down exactly how you want it on your website unless your looking for a creative style and would rather let the freelance designer do his/her own thing.  Make sure you know what colors you want it to be and what style you are looking for.  For example do you want a slideshow on the main page that grabs the guests attention?  It is also a good idea to research other sites that are similar to your business and write them down for reference.

Marketing & SEO

1.  The first step is to obtain a good domain name for your website. It is the internet address for your site.  There are different types of domain names with different extensions.  For a commercial website, “.com” or “.net” extensions are the most desirable.  The domain name selected should be easy to spell and easy to remember.  You can also use some important keywords in your domain name.  This will improve the search engine ranking of your site.

2.  The second step is to build a professional looking website for your business. Care should be taken to design the website as it will reflect your business and people who visit it will either be attracted or turned off by it’s looks.  The website can be developed with the help of various software packages available or you may take the help of professional web design consultants, who will custom build a site for you.

3.  The site should be easy to navigate.  A good site is one where the visitors can easily find what they are looking for.  There should be a clear navigation bar and a ‘Search Box’ and the products should be clearly displayed.  The purchasing process should be made easy.  For e-commerce websites, there should be a shopping cart and a credit card authorization system.

1. Own a Facebook Account

1.  Make sure that the site is search engine friendly.  All the pages must have appropriate and descriptive titles, tagged with relevant key phrases.  The pages must be easily accessible by the search engines.  For example, never use Flash or Java as the only way to access a page as there is no data that can be gathered from flash pages.

2.  Your website must have enough content and it should be updated on a regular basis.  If the content is outdated, the search engines may not visit your site often.  The content should be optimized with the right keywords.  If you use wrong keywords (which are not relevant to your topic) or use keywords which are too generic, it will be difficult for your site to rank high in the search engines.  So, do your keyword research carefully and look for keywords/key-phrases which are relevant to your business but have less competition.

3.  Before submitting the site, build your links effectively.  Link building involves getting incoming links from quality websites.  It is a continuous process and should be done consistently.  Good quality incoming links will improve the search engine ranking of a website.  But it is a time consuming process and can be done by using forum posting, blog commenting, article submission, directory submission etc.

4.  Before submitting a site to the search engines, test the keywords, titles and headlines of the web pages.  ‘Pay Per Click’ or PPC ads are a very useful tool for testing these.  PPC ads can be used to test which headlines and keywords are attracting sales.  The advantage of PPC ads are that a number of tests can be done in a short period of time.  This will help to fine tune your site before submitting to the search engines.

Search engine marketing is a continuous process which must be carried on, on a long term basis.  You must monitor how many visitors are visiting the site from search engines, which keywords they are using etc. and make necessary changes as and when necessary.
